Larry Godfrey
Larry Godfrey is an Ojibwe artist based in Gladstone who works with traditional materials used by his ancestors to create art pieces. He uses birch bark, pine resin, cedar root, bone, copper, leather, rawhide, quills, beads, and other supplies.
Larry learned how to make a birchbark canoe from two other canoe makers – one in Minnesota and one in Michigan. He took what he learned and uses some of the same techniques in making birch bark containers and baskets. He’s studied techniques from several books and transformed them into his own work and techniques.
He’s taught a number of classes in using birchbark and other traditional materials to create vessels and medallions in several places including the Crazy Horse Museum, Bonifas Arts Center, and Calumet Art Center.
